The path of life is already fixed beyond the crucifixion. Psalm 16 does not linger on the descent into Sheol. It simply states that the Holy One will not be abandoned there and will not see corruption. What it sets before the reader is what follows: the path of life, fullness of joy in the Father’s presence, and pleasures forevermore at His right hand. The view beyond the crucifixion is the view the words already face. It is the same view that makes endurance possible for those who share the path.

David’s heart struck him the moment the corner left the robe. The same anointing still rested on Saul. The word already in him would not stay hidden in the cave.

The same room that once received “I do not know him” now receives the crucifixion and the resurrection stated as fact. They appeal to the righteous judge who is listening. The Sanhedrin is subject to the Judge and they are being witnessed against.

They had not seen the angel. They had only seen the prisoner whose warning their own hands had already obeyed.

Assyria had broken every nation that stood in its path. Then the word came: the LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. Those who trust in him reside within the walls of an unconquerable fortress.

The boat left both shores behind. On the quiet water Jesus named the difference between the sign that had already been received and the further sign that was still demanded. Mark 8.

Jonathan left the six hundred and crossed over with only his armor-bearer. He did not claim the outcome. He named the character of the LORD—“nothing restrains the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few”—and acted on the sign they set.

Twenty fell. Panic came from God. Israel was saved that day.

The LORD who is not restrained by many or by few still acts when we cross over the ground in the belief He may act for us.

Onesimus abandoned a household where the gospel was already known and crossed to Rome. There he entered the rented lodging where Paul sat chained to a Roman soldier and confessed what he was: a runaway slave. The letter that followed did not command; it appealed. It asked that the man who had fled be received no longer as a slave but as a beloved brother. The declaration had already been written. The practice still had to be chosen.
